Admission Procedures

Any Salem County student of appropriate age and grade level may apply for the high school programs or academies available through SCVTS. A wide array of career and technical programs are offered at the Salem Tech campus as both full and shared-time options. The Host-Site Academies are additional full-time options offered thanks to an articulation agreement with our K-12 district partners around the county. Tuition for all our high school offerings is free to county residents, and transportation is provided by the student’s resident school district.

The Salem Tech campus supports 16 career and technical programs, while an additional 10 “academy” programs are hosted at one of four partner high schools throughout the county:

  • Arthur P. Schalick High School: Academy of Dance; Academy of Exercise Science & Kinesiology; Academy of Theater; Academy of Visual Arts
  • Penns Grove High School: Academy of Engineering
  • Pennsville Memorial High School: Academy of Graphic Design in Multimedia Technology (GMT); Academy of Instrumental Music; Academy of Vocal Music
  • Woodstown High School: Academy of Communications; Academy of Finance & Business

The application submission window for all SCVTS applications opens on September 1 and concludes at the end of January.  Completed applications may be submitted directly to the SCVTS office of admissions or via the applicant’s resident school district (i.e. guidance office, CST case manager, support staff).

Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to attend the Salem Tech Open House event in October and/or a Host-Site Academy Information Session during the late fall at one of the host-site high schools.

All applicants are evaluated via an internal admission review conducted by an admission panel consisting of administrative, school counseling and support staff and based on scholastic information obtained from the applicant’s current school of enrollment.  Materials requested for means of admission review include copies of report cards and attendance records from the last two school years, including the current year, as well as the results of any recent district educational assessment.

Additionally, all full-time and host-site academy applicants are required to complete the SCVTS admission exam, which is a grade-level appropriate Math and Language Arts assessment administered by an SCVTS district proctor during late winter either at the applicant’s current school or during a predetermined testing session on the Salem Tech campus.  [Shared-time applicants are not required to complete an admission test, and their admission review will be based on the school documents and scholastic data previously highlighted.]  Data from the records collected for the admission reviews of each applicant is extrapolated into a scoring rubric to determine if the applicant falls within the accepted range for acceptance per district guidelines.

Students applying to a host-site academy may be responsible for completing additional admission steps as required by the specific academy’s administrative and/or instructional staff.  The following host-site academies require an additional admission procedure: Communications (interview and essay); Dance (audition); Exercise Science & Kinesiology (interview and essay); Finance & Business (interview and essay); Graphic Design in Multimedia Technology (portfolio and interview); Instrumental & Vocal Music (audition); Theater (audition); Visual Arts (portfolio and interview).  Details and scheduling information for these additional procedures are provided to each applicable candidate through the SCVTS office of admissions.  The academy staff at each site will share the results of these sessions with the SCVTS office of admissions and provide their recommendations for each applicant.  This information, along with the applicant’s academic review, forms the basis for the academy applicant’s admission determination.

In the early spring (typically by the first week of April), admission determinations for each applicant will be shared directly with the parent/guardian of the applicant as well as all pertinent school personnel at the applicant’s current school district.

Throughout the admission process, the SCVTS office of admissions is available to provide assistance and support to the parent/guardian of the applicant as well as school district personnel at the sending school districts.  The email address for contacting the SCVTS office of admissions is .

The Salem County Vocational Technical School District offers equal opportunity to qualified individuals regardless of age, color, national origin, race, gender, marital status, sexual orientation or handicap.
