Throughout the 2023-24 School Year, Salem County Vocational Technical Schools (SCVTS) will be celebrating 50 years of providing career and technical education to students in Salem County.
To kick things off, the district held a special ceremony on Wednesday, August 2 during which the contents of a time capsule from the site’s inaugural year of 1974 were revealed. Among the special guests on hand was the original and longest tenured Superintendent of Schools in SCVTS history, Dr. Bill Adams.
Dr. William Adams played a pivotal role in memorializing the district at that time through this special exercise which honored thoughts and important facts at that time.
Among the many items placed in the 1974 Time Capsule and unveiled at the event included: a list of the 1974 Board for Vocational Education; a list of the 1974 Staff and Instructors; a list of the Student Body; newspaper articles of the groundbreaking for the school; Invitation to the first Open House; and a Student Guide book for Success.
Jason Helder, Principal of the Salem County Career and Technical High School also announced items that would be included in the 2024 Time Capsule: a photo and messages from the Board of Education and the Senior Staff of the district; a list of the students enrolled for the 2023-2034 School Year; a 2023 Yearbook; a varsity letter with pins from the sports offered at the school; a school brochure listing programs, clubs and sports offered; and a letter from the current Superintendent to the Superintendent who will serve in 2074. More items may be added to the time capsule before closing it on September 15th.
Several other observances, activities and ceremonies are planned throughout the school year to commemorate this milestone. The school will hold several alumni events throughout the school year; and starting in September a successful alumnus will be highlighted on their website and social media outlets. The school’s Educational Foundation will also host a 50th Anniversary dinner early in March 2024.
